Why the Supernatural Events in the Bible Matter

The Bible is not just a book of ancient wisdom or moral lessons; it is a stunning record of divine intervention. From the creation of the universe out of nothing to the empty tomb of Jesus Christ, the Scriptures are punctuated by moments where God breaks through the natural order to accomplish His sovereign will. These supernatural events are not footnotes—they are the main story, revealing the true nature of the God we worship.

Foundations of Power in the Old Testament

The history of Israel is built upon the miraculous. Consider the events of the Exodus. When God delivered His people from Egyptian bondage, He didn't use subtle diplomacy; He used ten devastating plagues that systematically dismantled the power structure and false gods of the greatest empire on earth. The parting of the Red Sea wasn't merely a timely wind—it was a seismic, world-altering display that demonstrated God's absolute sovereignty over creation and history. These acts established the covenant: Israel was to be a people who knew that their God was not limited by pharaohs, armies, or the laws of physics. They proved, unequivocally, that our Creator is also our Redeemer.

The Ultimate Miracle: Jesus Christ

While the Old Testament contains many stunning miracles, they all point toward the ultimate divine intrusion: the Incarnation. God becoming flesh in Jesus of Nazareth is the supreme supernatural event. Christ's ministry was a relentless stream of miracles—healing the blind, curing leprosy, walking on water, and calming storms. These were not random acts of kindness; they served as undeniable credentials, validating His identity as the Son of God. Every time He cast out a demon or brought a person back from death (like Lazarus), He was demonstrating that He held the keys to life, death, and the spiritual realm. His miracles showed that the Kingdom of God was breaking into human history.

The Victory of the Empty Tomb

The capstone of the biblical narrative is, of course, the Resurrection. If Christ’s miracles were proof of His power, the Resurrection is proof of His victory. The greatest challenge to any power—death itself—was utterly vanquished. The empty tomb confirms that Jesus accomplished what no one else could: He overcame sin and death, offering eternal life to all who believe. This single event makes all other miracles meaningful and grounds our faith not in a philosophy, but in a historical, supernatural reality.

What Does This Mean for Us Today?

The supernatural events recorded in the Bible are not relics of a distant past; they are anchors for our present hope. They remind us that we serve a God who is capable of anything. When we face obstacles that seem insurmountable—whether physical illness, spiritual bondage, or overwhelming anxiety—we can look back at the Red Sea, the resurrection of Lazarus, and the empty tomb, and know that our circumstances are never too large for our God.

The same Holy Spirit who enabled those miraculous works in history is alive and active in believers today, empowering us for ministry, providing wisdom, and sustaining us through trials. The supernatural in the Bible assures us that God is engaged, personal, and powerful enough to see His plan fulfilled, both in the world and in our individual lives. We serve the God who continually steps into history.
