The Pharisee/Tax Collector Prayer
The parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector
(Luke 18:9–14) is a powerful lesson in humility and the nature of God's grace. Depending on your needs, here are three different ways to pray through this scripture.

A Prayer for Humility
Focuses on softening the heart and avoiding self-righteousness.

"Lord, help me to see myself clearly through Your eyes. Forgive me for the times I have looked at others with judgment or compared my 'virtue' to their 'failings.' Deliver me from the pride that masks itself as piety.

Let me never forget that my standing before You is a gift of Your grace, not a result of my merit. Soften my heart toward those I am tempted to look down upon, and remind me that we all stand on level ground at the foot of the cross.

In Jesus' Name
Amen."
The Prayer of the Tax Collector
A reflection on the simple, honest cry for mercy.

"Heavenly Father, I come before You today with nothing to boast of and no masks to wear. Like the tax collector in the temple, I cannot even lift my eyes to heaven, knowing my own heart.

'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.'
Thank You that You do not require a list of my achievements, but a heart that is open and contrite. Thank You that Your mercy is greater than my mistakes, and that in my brokenness, I am justified by Your love alone.
In Jesus' Name
Amen."

A Daily Reflection Prayer
A shorter version for morning or evening devotion.

"Lord, today keep me from the 'temple of my own ego.' May I not be 'thankful that I am not like other people,' but rather thankful that You love all people. Teach me to walk humbly, love mercy, and find my worth only in You.
In Jesus' Name
Amen."
