Parable of the Vineyard Workers Prayer

The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard (Matthew 20:1–16) is a beautiful, if sometimes challenging, reminder that God’s grace isn’t a wage we earn, but a gift freely given.

Here is a prayer centered on the themes of that story.

A Prayer for Generous Grace

Heavenly Father,

We thank you for being the Master of the Vineyard, who goes out at every hour of the day to seek us and call us into your service.

Help us to remember that your grace is a gift. When we feel we have worked longer or harder than others, quiet the voices of comparison and pride in our hearts. Keep us from measuring our worth by our effort, and instead help us find our value in your invitation alone.

Grant us a heart like yours. Deliver us from "the evil eye" of envy. When you show extraordinary kindness to those who have arrived late, or those who seem "undeserving" in our eyes, let us rejoice alongside you. Help us to celebrate the truth that your mercy is not a limited resource, but an overflowing well.

Give us joy in the work. Whether we have served you from our youth or have only just found you today, let our reward be the privilege of working in your kingdom. May we be grateful for the "denarius" of your love, which is enough for every soul.

We stand in awe of your justice, which is always tempered by your infinite generosity.

In Jesus' Name

Amen.

Reflection Points

If you are using this for a service or personal study, here are a few themes to consider:

 * The First and the Last: How does it feel to realize that in God's eyes, everyone receives the same "full payment" of salvation?

 * The Invitation: The Master kept going back to the marketplace. Is there someone in your life you feel is "too late" to be called?

 * Envy vs. Gratitude: The workers who started early weren't cheated; they were paid exactly what they agreed to. Does our "fairness" ever get in the way of our gratitude?

Glory to God for using my hands in building this site inspired by the Holy Ghost!
