Finding God in the Echo of Your Soul
Have you ever stood on the edge of the ocean and felt a pull toward the horizon that you couldn’t quite explain? Or sat in the silence of a late night, feeling a hollow ache that no amount of scrolling, snacking, or success could fill?
That sensation isn't a glitch in your system. It’s a signal.
It is what the Palmist describes in Psalm 42:7:
> "Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me."
>
The Echo of the Infinite
The phrase "Deep calls to deep" suggests that there are layers to our existence that the surface world simply cannot reach. We spend most of our lives in the "shallows"—managing schedules, paying bills, and keeping up appearances. But God didn’t just create us as surface-level beings. He "set eternity in the human heart" (Ecclesiastes 3:11).
When you feel that profound longing, it is the Deep of God (His infinite love, His Spirit, His vastness) calling out to the deep of your soul.
Why Does it Feel Like a Storm?
Notice the context of Psalm 42. The writer isn't sitting in a spa; he is distressed. He talks about "roaring waterfalls" and being swept over by "waves and breakers."
Sometimes, God calls to us most clearly when our world is chaotic. When the surface-level comforts are stripped away by grief, transition, or exhaustion, we are forced into the depths. It is in the "deep" where:
* Superficial prayers turn into raw, honest cries.
* Religiosity turns into a desperate need for a Relationship.
* Distractions die out, leaving only the voice of the Creator.
Answering the Call
How do we respond when the deep begins to call? It requires a shift in how we seek Him.
* Stop Fearing the Silence: We often drown out the "deep" with noise because the depths feel lonely or intimidating. Embrace the quiet; it’s the medium through which God speaks.
* Be Brutally Honest: The Psalms are a masterclass in "deep calling to deep" because they don't hide emotion. If you’re angry, hurting, or confused, tell Him. The Deep of God can handle your depths.
* Look Beyond the Physical: Recognize that your physical thirst is often a symptom of a spiritual drought. As the deer pants for streams of water, your soul is looking for the only source that is deep enough to satisfy.
The Bottom Line
If you feel overwhelmed by the waves today, or if you feel a longing you can’t name, take heart. You aren't drowning; you're being called deeper. The Creator of the universe is inviting you into a conversation that goes far beyond the surface of your life.
God is deep, and He is calling to the deep in you.
