The Unjust Steward Prayer
The parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus (found in Luke 16:19–31) is a powerful call to compassion, awareness, and the recognition of our shared humanity.
Depending on your needs, here are three different ways to pray through this parable.
1. A Prayer for Compassion (Traditional)
"Heavenly Father, we thank You for the teachings of Your Son, which challenge our hearts and open our eyes. We pray today for the grace to see the 'Lazarus' at our own gates—those who are suffering, hungry, or lonely while we live in comfort.
Lord, forgive us for the times we have been indifferent or blind to the needs of others. Soften our hearts so that we do not wait for a sign from the afterlife to do what is right today.
Help us to use the resources You have given us to bring healing and hope to the world.
In Jesus' Name
Amen."
2. A Prayer for Spiritual Sight (Personal)
"Lord, help me to see as You see. Sometimes I am so wrapped up in my own 'purple linen' and daily comforts that I forget the eternal value of the person standing right in front of me.
Give me the courage to cross the chasm of my own pride or busyness. Let me listen to 'Moses and the Prophets'—to the wisdom of Your Word—and act on it now, while there is still time. Do not let me be defined by what I possess, but by how I love.
In Jesus' Name
Amen."
3. A Short Litany of Remembrance
* For those who hunger: Lord, may we be the hands that feed them.
* For those in pain: Lord, may we be the presence that comforts them.
* For those with plenty: Lord, may we be the spirit that shares with them.
* For the doors we keep closed: Lord, give us the strength to open them wide.
A Key Reflection: This parable isn't just about the afterlife; it's a reminder that our choices today create the world we live in. It encourages us to bridge the gaps between "us" and "them" before they become permanent.
